Many years ago, I read Endurance, a ship about Shackleton’s ill-fated mission to Antarctica. The ship was crushed in the ice, forcing the crew onto the shore. They spent quite a few weeks on the land and eventually were rescued.
A few days ago, Shackleton’s ship was found: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/09/climate/endurance-wreck-found-shackleton.html
Once again, this barely relates to ghost towns or industry, but I still find it fascinating. What it does show is that merely 107 years ago, a flash of time in human history, our great explorers were going to Antarctica in wooden ships. We went from wooden ships with sails to landing on the moon in my grandfather’s lifetime.
Thank you for reading my post.
