Last year, the MV Golden Ray, a cargo ship, capsized in shallow water off the coast of Georgia. Thankfully, all 24 passengers were rescued by the US Coast Guard. On board were around 4200 new cars.
After a year of hanging out in salt water, there are plans to remove the large ship. It will be cut into sections with a giant chain! The ship will be cut into sections using a slow-moving large chain, and then carried by barge to Louisiana for recycling. It’s the most metal death for anything ever. I’m pretty sure Cannibal Corpse is writing a song about this.
What about the 4200 cars on board? Well, LIDAR imaging shows that they are not in great shape. Many were not tied down and slid to one end of the ship. Others look like they have fire damage. A few look okay, but appear to break the laws of gravity, because they are submerged and partially floating. They’ll be scrapped, too.
