A submarine is about as far as you can get from a dusty ghost town, yet it still somehow fits into this blog, at least in my opinion.
Back in 2012, I had the opportunity to go on board the USS Albuquerque (SSN 706), a Los Angeles class attack nuclear submarine. I was on board for a promotional bit, where the US Navy showed off their submarine to advertise for the Naval Officer’s Program geared towards recruiting college students to join the Navy.
We departed from Point Loma (San Diego, CA), and went through angles and dangles off the California coast.
I even got to go into one of the torpedo tubes and sign the hatch with a grease pen.
Back in 2017, the submarine was retired, and recently, it has been in the process of disassembly and scrapping operations. I was sad to hear that, but such is the life of military hardware.
Recently, the city of Albuquerque has been involved in building a monument in honor of the submarine. The details of this effort are shown at this site. It looks like they will build a tasteful park around it.
I am really looking forward to this site.
Thank you for reading my post.
